Visual inspection, code reading and dimensional measurement with GigE Vision industrial cameras. Each camera needs its own network link so they don’t fight over bandwidth, and usually needs power over that same cable (PoE) to save one more wire to a hard-to-reach spot.

The image-processing machine standing behind the line: it takes frames from several cameras and runs the inspection software. This is the most common form for machine vision — it needs multiple network links, and when the algorithms get heavy, a slot for a GPU card.

A network link for each camera. Plugging four GigE cameras into a switch and then into one LAN port is the surest way to lose frames at peak load. One dedicated port per camera means the bandwidth is never shared. If there aren’t enough ports built in, there must be a spare slot for a network card.

Where people get caught out

  • This is where our stock is thinnest: machines with 4+ LAN ports or PoE built in are few. In most cases you buy a machine with an expansion slot and add a multi-port network card — cheaper and more flexible.
  • A PoE card powering the cameras means adding the camera load to the power budget. Four PoE cameras add roughly 30W — run the power calculator before choosing a supply.
  • Machines with card slots almost always have a fan. In a dusty environment, plan for dust filters and a cleaning schedule — or accept moving the machine out of the dusty area and running longer camera cables.
