The CPU may be the same, but an industrial machine is designed to run continuously for years where an office PC would not survive. The differences lie in six areas: 1. Temperature: office PCs usually handle about 10…35 °C; industrial machines 0…50 °C, with wide-range versions to -40…70 °C. 2. Cooling: many are fanless with sealed housings that draw no dust inside. 3. Power: they accept wide-range DC directly from the cabinet, such as 9–36 VDC, with reverse-polarity and overvoltage protection. 4. Interfaces: RS-232/485 COM, CAN, isolated DIO, multiple LAN ports, screw-locking connectors. 5. Mechanical robustness: tested for shock and vibration, with DIN-rail, wall and panel mounting. 6. Lifecycle: the same model is produced for years, and component changes are announced, which makes replacement and cloning easier. So compare total cost over several years: a single line stoppage caused by a failed machine often costs more than the purchase price difference. In a clean, cool, vibration-free control room, a good office PC can still serve for some tasks.
