Choosing a machine

Our food plant washes floors and equipment with pressure hoses every shift. How should we choose a Panel PC for that area?

IPC247 engineering Answered on 2026-09-16
Pressure washdown areas are the harshest environment for a Panel PC, so choose based on how cleaning is actually done. Protection rating: IP65 covers the front only and ordinary water jets. High-pressure, hot-water washdown needs a fully sealed unit rated IP66 or IP69K. Ask whether the rating applies to the front or the whole enclosure. Housing: stainless steel (typically SUS 304 or 316), a flat front with no gaps or exposed screws where bacteria can collect. Chlorinated cleaning agents corrode 304 faster than 316. Connectors: cables enter through sealed M12 connectors or sealed conduit; no exposed USB ports. Cooling: a fully sealed unit has no fan, so the CPU must be a low-power type. Touch: capacitive touch with a water-rejection mode, or resistive touch if workers wear thick rubber gloves.
