We plan to add a discrete graphics card to an industrial computer for AI. What should we check before buying?

A discrete graphics card is the item most likely to derail a plan if not checked carefully, because it affects power, mechanics and thermals at once. 1. Slot: you need an electrically x16 PCIe slot, not just an x16-shaped one, and room for a dual- or triple-slot card. 2. Dimensions: measure the maximum length and height the chassis allows and compare with the card. 3. Power: mid-range cards draw 70–250 W. The machine needs auxiliary GPU power connectors and a supply with enough headroom; use a power calculator to add up the total. 4. Thermals: GPUs almost always need fans. The chassis must move air across the card, and the rated temperature range with a GPU fitted is usually narrower than without. 5. Drivers: confirm the operating system and CUDA version your AI software requires. If you need something compact and vibration-tolerant, consider a machine using an MXM GPU module or a Jetson module instead of a full-size PCIe card.
