Industrial machines come with everything from Atom and Celeron to Core i7. Which level avoids both overspending and underpowering?

Choose by what the machine does every day, then add about 30% headroom for software that grows heavier over the years. Atom, Celeron: data collection, gateways, simple HMIs, display kiosks, controlling a single device. Low power and easy to run fanless across a wide temperature range. Core i3: multi-screen HMIs, small SCADA, barcode reading and simple single-camera vision. Core i5: SCADA with a few thousand tags, 2–4 camera vision with classical algorithms, several applications running side by side. Core i7, i9 or Xeon: multi-camera high-resolution imaging, virtual machines, simulation, or an on-site data server. Three notes: compare CPUs by generation and core count, not just the i5/i7 name; the stronger the CPU, the narrower the fanless temperature range; and for AI workloads a GPU or accelerator matters more than the CPU.
