Choosing a machine
Industrial SSDs cost several times more than consumer SSDs. What is actually different, and is it worth it?

They differ in four ways, and the cost is justified when the machine runs continuously or sits in a harsh location.
1. Temperature: consumer SSDs are usually rated around 0…70 °C; industrial SSDs come in -40…85 °C versions.
2. NAND type and endurance: industrial SSDs often use SLC or pSLC (TLC operated at one bit per cell), giving many times more program/erase cycles. Check TBW (total terabytes written) or DWPD (drive writes per day) in the datasheet.
3. Power-loss protection: capacitors hold enough energy to finish writing in-flight data when power is cut suddenly.
4. Fixed BOM: the vendor commits not to change the NAND and controller for a long period, which matters when cloning hundreds of identical machines.
A consumer SSD is still acceptable for an office-style machine in a cool control room with little writing. Machines that log continuously, record cameras, or suffer frequent power loss should use an industrial SSD.
