What is Windows 10/11 IoT Enterprise LTSC? Should industrial computers use it instead of Windows Pro?

IPC247 engineering Answered on 2026-09-16
Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC is the Windows edition for fixed-purpose devices, with three differences from Windows Pro that matter in a plant. 1. Long support: an LTSC release receives security updates for about 10 years from its release date, with no forced yearly feature upgrades. Regular Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025, while IoT Enterprise LTSC releases are still supported; check exact dates on Microsoft's product lifecycle pages. 2. Fewer changes: no Microsoft Store and fewer bundled apps, a stable interface, and control software less affected by updates. 3. Lockdown tools: Unified Write Filter, kiosk mode running a single application, and disabling system shortcuts. IoT Enterprise licences are sold with the device through OEM channels and tied to the machine, not sold separately like Windows Pro. Use it for HMIs, control machines and kiosks that run for many years. If your software only runs on standard Windows, or you need a continuous flow of new features, Windows Pro is the better fit.
