Fault diagnosis
Answer a few questions to narrow down the cause. The steps follow the order technicians actually use: rule things out from the outside in, from cheap to expensive.
What to do
The machine is not booting, even though it powers on
- Listen for beeps at power-on — beep codes tell RAM faults from board faults
- Remove the RAM, clean the contacts and reseat it firmly — vibration works RAM loose over time
- With more than one module, test each module in each slot
- Clear the CMOS using the button or Clear CMOS jumper on the machine
- Remove all drives and expansion cards, leaving only CPU + 1 RAM module, then try
Before opening the machine. Disconnect power, wait for capacitors to discharge, and photograph the current wiring. If the machine is under warranty, call us first — opening it yourself may void the warranty.
